News Shmews!
I find it interesting that a satirical news show such as “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” which started off as an entertaining parody on the news, is now considered the most trusted source for news and information in America. Has humor, sarcasm and the ability to make fun of the President of the United States on national television revealed a new frontier as Americans? Has "The Daily Show" replaced CNN,NBC or FOX as the most reliable source of information and political news? Is Jon Stewart the voice of the people?
Flu You!
I avoided catching the Flu thanks to Google. Apparently, Google.org created a search system called Google Flu Trends that indicates Flu activity, where it is moderately or extremely active, offers a location manager so one can get the Flu shot, and informs all of this before the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) does. We must have stepped into a new era that allows anyone with a computer and Internet to access valuable information Online regarding their health.
HOLY Hologram!
It’s the year 2008- we are in an economic crisis, our newly elected President is black, and reporters are now beamed anywhere. No, this is not a plot summary for a new Star Trek film or series, this is what we are witnessing today. Is this the future for media reporting and communication?
Justin.tv
Few people realize that they can be the best reality show on the Internet. Online video streaming is nothing new in the year 2008, but to broadcast your everyday life and have others subscribe and watch it is different. In 2007, Justin.tv established itself as one of the most popular live video streaming websites. This site is free for anyone to join and anyone with an account and a camera can broadcast their life. So is this the future of entertainment and the end of privacy?
I Don't Remember Doing That
What we see on television is completely different to what happens, so what can we consider the truth? I attended the VH1 Hip Hop Honors last week, a great tribute to the legends of the hip hop culture as well as a huge production process in general. Being a television major, I was intrigued to watch the process of such a show. I had watch these honors on television for the past three years, and after watching the live show and the edited television version that weekend, I was surprised to see how much of the original content was manipulated.
Spike's Miracle in 2008
After almost thirty years of directing films focused on racism, social injustice, and the New York urban lifestyle, Spike Lee is considered racist for attempting to tell the truth in the year 2008. Spike Lee’s newest joint, “Miracle at St. Anna” has stirred up concerns and complaints from critics and viewers because Lee dared to emphasize on racism within an army platoon during WWII. How and why would this film, let alone racism, be a concern when the economy is falling apart in front of our eyes and a new election is upon us?
Emmy-diate
Information comes immediately for us in this day and age with the technology we have embrace, challenged and utilized. News, information, updates, facts- all of this is available for anyone anywhere, leaving it virtually-and literally- impossible for viewers and readers to be left in the dark. The 60th Prime Time Emmy Awards aired this past weekend, blasting the pre-show, awards, after party, personal interviews and fashion reviews for hours into the night and into the next day. Viewers don't have to watch the show, stay seated, or wait past commercials to enjoy this ceremony.
I Can Hear You Getting Dumber
It's not the ant-drug and anti-smoking ads on television that should be blasted in the faces of young teens and viewers on MTV or VH1, it should be anti-reality show development advertisements banning tasteless shows that seem to multiply overnight. Reality television has been an American cultural signature for about eight years, starting with shows like Big Brother and Survivor, but how did reality tv become the most common genre of television shows?
